There are two main parts of a natural tooth, the root and the crown. The crown is what is visible in the mouth. The crown is used for chewing and it helps maintain the shape of the face. The root is what attaches the crown to the jaw and holds it in place. A dental implant is a modern and reliable way to replace a crown and root when they are damaged or lost.
What is a Dental Implant?
Teeth implants replace a patient’s missing natural teeth. Whether you work or live in Bixby,OK, dental implants are right around the corner at our office. You will be able to confidently smile and even chew in areas where teeth had been previously missing.
A dental implant consists of 3 parts: the Implant, Abutment, and Crown.
The implant itself is a small titanium post that is placed into bone in area of the missing tooth. Once the tooth implant is placed in the bone it needs to heal. During healing, bone surrounds and attaches to the titanium post creating a stable structure where a crown will be attached.
Once healing is complete, the next step is to place the abutment and take an impression that will be used to create the crown. The abutment is the transition between the implant and the crown. Most abutments are screwed into the implant and provide a surface for the final crown to be cemented on to.
Finally, the crown (or cap) is the tooth portion of the implant system that will be visible in the mouth. Once cemented, the dental implant can be treated like a natural tooth. Daily brushing can begin at this point.
Dental implants can be placed in a single space or can be used to support bridges and even stabilize poorly fitting dentures known as an overdenture.
After receiving their quality dental implants, area patients receive home care instructions from our on how to best care for their new implants.
